Police Officer And Prosecutor Involved In Lee Sun Kyun’s Case Indicted For Leaking Investigation

A police officer and a prosecutor involved in the high-profile drug abuse case involving actor Lee Sun Kyun have been indicted for leaking confidential information to the media.

On June 5, KST, the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the indictment of “A,” a police officer in his 30s, and “B,” a prosecutorial investigator in his 40s. Both are facing charges for leaking official secrets. A third person, “C,” a journalist, was also indicted for violating the Personal Information Protection Act.
Officer A stands accused of photographing and sharing investigation documents with outsiders on October 18, 2023. He revealed the names, criminal records, and professions of the individuals involved in the case. This confidential information was sent to two journalists.
Investigator B reportedly disclosed to another reporter that Lee Sun Kyun was under investigation, causing the case to be made public in the most sensational manner on October 19, 2023.
Lee Sun Kyun, known internationally for his role in Parasite, had been booked for an investigation on October 14, 2023, and was questioned three times by the police before he was found dead on December 26, 2023. After his demise, Dispatch published reports accusing the police and media of colluding to publicize confidential information about the actor without fact-checking. Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho later led major creatives in the industry to band together and demand accountability from the authorities.
